The patient showed a high fever of 39 deg C and the X-ray film showed a severe adhesive intestinal obstruction on the 2nd day after the operation. I was so surprised and opened his abdomen. It was only 2 days after the operation, but the shunt tube was surrounded by massive granulation tissue and an abscess had already developed. Unbelievable! I was so surprised to see it. I fixed the cause of the intestinal obstruction and did the abdominal drainage.
After the operation, I got the pathological report about the specimen which I took out of the patient in the 1st operation. The diagnosis was mesenteric panniculitis. I don't have any experience of the treatment for this disease. I asked my senior colleague for some advice.
He replied: The more you do the operation, the more adhesions will occur. Finally the patient will get seriously ill. You don't want to do the operation if you can find any other way. I decided to give him a low dose of steroids.
