An African subscriber sent me an e-mail asking me about the number on the footer of the postcard which I wrote about the other day. She says, "Is it a kind of serial number like on bills?" I thought that her inquiry might be universal, and decided to write this entry not the private reply.
To tell the truth, this officially-issued New Year Greeting Post Card contains the lottery called "Otosidama". In the middle of January, several designated people are supposed to draw lots. The best award is several 2-3 days' domestic or overseas trips for two persons as your choice or home electric appliances like the TV, PC, and so on. The lowest award is stamps worth 130 yen (1.50 US dollar). The lowest prize is decided from the last two numbers. For instance, it is announced like 11, 33, 57. These indicate the last two numbers of the serial number, and the possibility of the lowest prize is 3/100. I get 200-300 greeting cards every year, but I've never won a better prize than the lowest before. What will become of this year?
