My hometown is the capital city of Ehime Prefecture, which is located in Shikoku, the smallest island of the four main islands of Japan. As you know, Japan has experienced a series of huge earthquakes, tsunami and the serious nuclear plant accident last March.
Japan has more than 50 nuclear reactors across the country and three of them are in Ehime. Those reactors belong to Ikata Nuclear Power Plant. My office is located within the circle of 30 kilometers in radius from the plant. Today, a massive nuclear disaster drill was conducted. My personal opinion is that the plant is substantially secure against disasters. The reactors were built with Japanese highly advanced nuclear technology. On the other hand, the reactors damaged by the tsunami in Fukushima were introduced from the U.S. at the still early days of nuclear power technology. It means they were old-fashioned. It would be the company's fault that they didn't concern themselves over the expected lifetime of the reactors. They should have replaced the reactors.
Anyway, the magnitude of the drill was unprecedented. I don't know how much money was channeled to the drill. Lots of townspeople; authorities like police, town officials, hospitals, every kind of school (primary, nursery,, ,), besides physically challenged people. Some were transferred by buses and boats. Others were picked up by choppers of the Self-Defence Force and the Coast Guard. Hospital personnel were engaged in the decontamination work of radioactive substances. It was just like a scene from a film.
