Look at the first picture. Do you know what in the picture drew my attention? It was the two national flags of Canada and the UK. I believed that one member of the married couple came from the UK at first glance. A couple of hours later, when I found the official house of the Lieutenant Governor on the map, I understood why two flags had been raised. Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations! I'm not familiar with modern Canadian politics, but when I noticed the reason why a national flag of the UK was raised in front of an ordinary folk house, the vivid remembrance of my high school days came up with the face of my history teacher. I used to wish I could visit foreign countries in those days. Now, it actually came true.
I'd like to add one more thing about the national flag. You might doubt it, but some Japanese people tend to hate their own national flag as the result of the biased education by people influenced by communism. Of course, I'm not one of these silly people, but I'm envious of Canadian people's pride in their national flag.

カナダで国旗を飾っているお宅を見る度に、同様に感じております。国旗や国歌にケチをつける日本の左翼の人たちはあまりにも幼稚で、情けなく思います。

Another reason for raising the British flag could be that they were proud of their British heritage.
