Gastown

     Vancouver's history as a city has its roots in what was a tiny settlement nicknamed Gastown, where we are in the picture.
     Look at the picture. It is the steam clock in Gastown that is one of the main tourist spots in Vancouver. When I visited here about 20 years ago for the first time, I didn't have any interest in Canadian history, but a coupon I happend to get in a car rental shop made me change. I got to think about Canadian history. The coupon said; The name Gastown came into use after the first settler "Gassy Jack." This is, naturally, a nickname. His real name was John Deighton. In Victorian times the term "to gas" referred to talking a lot, something which Deighton had become famous for. Don't you think it is interesting?

Totem Poles

     The totem pole display area at Brockton Point is the most visited tourist attraction in all of British Columbia and it has an interesting history. In the early 1920s, the elected Park Commissioners of the day supported the idea of constructing an Indian Village in Stanley Park near the Lumbermen's Arch area. This site was chosen as it had been the location of a massive midden, or cultural mound, resulting from years of habitation by the native aboriginal peoples. The midden primarily contained calcined shells that covered an area 8 feet deep over several acres. These shells were so numerous that they were used to surface Stanley Park's first perimeter road.

Naritasan-Shin'shohji Temple

     I saw my wrist watch pointing to 11 o'clock. I had to start for Narita International Airport immediately, but I was a stranger there. I was going to ask someone how to go to Narita and I headed for Ueno station.
     I was lucky to happen to find a sign saying "60 minutes to Narita!" at the entrance of Ueno Park and could get on the right train bound for Narita International Airport.
     I knew that Naritasan-Shin'shohji Temple was on the way after seeing the poster in the train. On every February 3rd, the bean-scattering ceremony celebrating the coming of spring is performed at this temple. It is called "Setsubun" and is an annual traditional event. Famous sumo wrestlers join the ceremony and throw beans there. I've often watched the scene on TV but I've not visited that temple before.      The temple was very big as I thought. The street to the temple was crowded. I prayed for a happy tour for all the people there.
     Today's lunch was at a small coffee shop, which also had a bakery, on the platform of Narita station. It was fun for me to have lunch and look around at a place that I was visiting for the first time.

A Funny Sign

     I found a funny sign in the castle. It says "Don't climb up this stone wall!" Everyone thinks who would try to climb up such an overhanging wall.
     To tell the truth, when I was about ten I tried. I just wanted to play cool in front of my girlfriends. I think it was foolishly reckless. As I went up to about 5 meters high, I became frozen to that level. In the end two police officers and some firefighters brought a long ladder and rescued me.
     I wondered if this sign was put there because of me. It could never happen, because my reckless behaviour was 40 years ago. I asked the guide if there are such reckless guys who climb up this wall now. To my surprise, the guide replied that a young man successfully climbed up without any climbing gear.      He is a hero from the Russo-Japanese War along with his brother, Yoshifuru Akiyama. If these two heros hadn't shown up at that time, Japan would have lost the war. As a result of the defeat in the war, the northeastern district of China and the Korean Peninsula would be occupied by Russia and also Japan. I'm really grateful to them and felt a little happy to know about his feat, because it was just like my feat.

Royal Dutch Shell

     It was nice weather today. I rode my scooter for a change and I put gas in the scooter. At this time a naive idea came up after seeing the logo of Showa Shell Sekiyu, a Royal Dutch Shell related company. Is this "Shell" that "shell" which is in the phrase "She sells sea shells on the seashore." ? I investigated the history of Royal Dutch Shell on the internet and was astonished to understand the origin of this company.
     An English Jew founded the Shell Corp., the precursor of Royal Dutch Shell in YOKOHAMA in 1897 just after the Japanese-Sino War. His name was Marcus Samuel, born in London as the son of a poor ambulant vendor. He came to Yokohama in Japan in 1872 when he was 16 years old. All his funds were only 5 pounds at that time.
     He succeeded in his business that made buttons or small toys from Japanese shells and exported them to the U.K. This means the shell of "Royal Dutch Shell" is a Japanese shell. After he was very successful as a trading merchant in Japan, he worked on the exploration of oil wells in Indonesia and hit the big time.
     As I wrote at the top of this entry, he established the Shell Corp. in Yokohama-motomachi in 1897, and this company developed into the Royal Dutch Shell which later merged with the Royal Dutch Corp.
     He supported Japan in Japanese-Sino War (1894-95) in collecting and transporting of military materials and food for soldiers. When the Japanese government changed silver standard system to gold standard in 1897, he helped the government sell Japanese bonds. He was awarded a decoration by the Emperor.
     He returned to London in 1902 and became the mayor of the city. Some researchers assume that he might have supported the conclusion of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance behind the curtain.
     I'm going to read some books handling the relationship between Japanese and Jewish people and mention my opinion here.

　今日は良い天気だった。気分転換にスクーターで出かけ、給油した。この時、ロイヤルダッチシェルの関連会社、昭和シェル石油のロゴを見て素朴な疑問が湧いてきた。このシェルは早口言葉になっているあのシェル(貝殻)だろうか？帰宅後、インターネットで調べてそのいわれを知り驚いた。

U.S. Presidential Election

     Female or Black? Such an issue is only superficial. His or her view of the world is correct or not? Anti-Japanese or pro-Japanese? Flatterer or having an affinity for China? These are the problems.
     During the next four years, the power of the U.S. will decrease drastically, I suppose. Some huge streams that affect world history will happen, like the tragedy of the era of former President Carter, 1976-1980. President Carter was born in the atmosphere of being weary of war and acknowledgement of the decline of th U.S.
     He declared at first he would pull the U.S. Army back from South Korea and made Asian countries feel doubtful about U.S. policy. He didn't intervene in African countries when the government was overthrown in Mozambique. At last his policy resulted in the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.
     You might wonder why I remember him like this. That's because I'd met him in Kanagawa prefecture where Commodore Perry arrived in 1853. I was a university student at that time. I wanted to meet him and I attended the meeting. I remember as if it was yesterday that I couldn't understand his English due to his strong dialect.

Letters from Iwo Jima

     I watched the DVD movie "Letters from Iwo Jima" directed by Clint Eastwood. Lots of Japanese people appreciated the movie two years ago, but I felt something different from them.
     A soldier, a former baker, relates his reminiscences that some policemen often stole his bread from his bakery shop. Was it actually true? Japanese people at that time were famed for their high moral fiber, and moreover the policemen were paid enough to survive wartime.
     Another soldier, a former policeman, spoke reflectively. His boss shot a dog dead with his pistol. Was it really true again? They had the thought that only a bullet was given by the Ten-noh and was very valuable.
     Iwo Jima is a small island near the equator. The climate is as you would think. The Japanese army was staying in a cave on that island. Food, water and medication were short and the system of ventilation was poor. It must have been hot in the cave. All the wounds and injuries would have got infected and given off terrible smells in the cave. Many soldiers were dehydrated from dysentery. However, the soldiers in the movie were lively and spoke loudly. I thought it would have been impossible while watching the movie.
     I like Clint Eastwood as an actor but I'm kind of dubious about him as a director. I'm very sorry that figments of a writer's imagination turn into facts in his movie because he says that this movie is a real story.

A Monument

     I got to feel like riding my scooter around suddenly seeing blue sky last Sunday. I went to Gogoshima Island, 10 minutes off the shore of Matsuyama City. The picture shows my scooter on the ferry boat and a monument that I found by chance honoring the victims of a submarine accident in World War Two. When the accident happened, the submarine was on the way to the battlefield and was repeating the training of going underwater and bursting to the surface. The monument seems to have been placed at the nearest point from the accident site on the island. I got sad to read the words on the monument. I shouted in my mind, "No more war!" I didn't know about this accident. Though more than a half century has passed since the accident, the monument was managed in a neat and tidy manner. Some oranges, fresh water and some plants were placed praying for the souls of those who perished in the accident. I guess they were deeply sorry, not that they had to die, but that they couldn't join the war.
     The last picture was taken at almost the highest point of the island. As you see, it is a destroyer of the Maritime Self-Defense Force of Japan. It looked like the warship had just come out of Kure Base, where Yamato, the all-time biggest warship, was constructed just before World War Two.

Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration

     I'd like to mention my private opinion about the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration that was announced when the Prime Minister at the time, Jun'ichiro Koizumi, visited North Korea on Sep. 17th in 2002.
     In my humble opinion the basic philosophy of this Declaration is to make peace in the Korean Peninsula with Japan playing an active role. However I think this basic philosophy itself is completely wrong.
     No matter what condition North Korea is in, in peace or on a war footing, it doesn't matter to Japan. There's no more significant meaning than that peace is better than war for Japan.
     Why does Japan have to take part in many issues related to North Korea? It's not because we have to bring about peace in the Korean Peninsula, but because we have the abduction issue with North Korea.
     Kim Jong-il abused not only the human rights of some individuals but also the sovereignty of Japan. The North Korean National Agency took more than 100 people out of Japan who were living peacefully in the nation. If Japan can't restore them to their original home, Japan can't be accepted as a nation. I think that the Japanese administration must have a stronger attitude against other countries otherwise Japan will lose the point of its existence.

小泉首相が訪朝して発表した日朝平壌宣言について私見を述べたい。宣言の基本は日本が積極的に関与して朝鮮半島に平和をもたらすというものだが、この基本そのものが根本的に間違っていると思う。朝鮮半島が平和であろうが、戦時体制であろうが日本には関係ない。日本にとって戦争よりは平和の方が良いという程度である。なぜ日本が北朝鮮問題に関わらねばならないのか？それは朝鮮半島に平和をもたらすためではなく、北朝鮮との間に拉致問題があるからである。金正日は個人の人権侵害だけでなく、日本の主権も侵した。北朝鮮は１００人以上の日本人を拉致した。もし日本が原状回復できなければ日本は国として認められないであろう。日本は強い態度を示すべきであり、そうでなければその存在の意味を失うであろう。

Toyota Automobile Museum

     I called in at the Toyota Museum on the way to Nagoya Station. Toyota is that Toyota that is one of the biggest companies in the world. You can understand the history of automobiles and the wisdom of human beings there. I saw a Ford Model T that is known as the world's first genuinely mass-produced car.
     The first domestically built automobile was exhibited at the entrance. This car must be an achievement of Toyota and also the starting point of Toyota. I let my mind drift back over the early 20th century. All the Japanese were struggling not to be left behind by the developed countries in those days. Consequently present-day Japan exists now.
     I sometimes feel that present-day Japan might be inferior to that of 100 years ago in many ways. Present-day Japanese, of course, including me, have been living in secure and comfortable circumstances for a long time and became blind to the incidents of the world. Japan has no religious confrontation with any other country and keeps good relationships with all countries except China and both Koreas. I think that Japan must work for world peace from now on because Japan has enough power and modesty to do so.
     While I was thinking that way I found the first car that came to my house about 40 years ago. I remember my father, who was younger than me at the equivalent time, was delighted to be able to polish the car. I'm thinking that I'll take my parents there.

Korean Letters 4

    I learned Korean history by myself. I focused on before the 19th century this time because I know roughly about after the 19th century.
     The pictures show the books that I read for these past 3 weeks. Both books in the first picture are written by a Korea-hating person and a Japan-hating person. I compared them with each other.
     The book on the right was written by a Japanese historian. His opinions, based on reliable evidence, seemed to be perfect. On the other hand the book on the left was funny and ridiculous. For example, the author describes the issue of Liancourt Rocks (Takeshima in Japanese) this way: Japan can easily file a lawsuit to the International Court of Justice because Japan has nothing to lose when it loses the case, but Korea is tightly controlling the Rocks effectively now and if it loses the case it has to give it up...so, Korea won't go to the Court.      What do you think about this excuse? It's literally nonsense. It's because the Korean administration officials know that they have no chance against Japan that Korea won't sit at the table of the International Court. The author continues ....  The Korean language is superior to Japanese because homonyms are fewer in Korean than in Japanese. I couldn't believe my eyes to read this. I think he is unqualified to write books. In Japan and China the written language is an ideogram. Korean is a phonogram. His opinion is completely wrong. Originally it's of no use to struggle for mastery between different languages.
     I really think that Korean is systematic and beautiful. I'm learning it like maths and listening to it like music. I like it though I'm sorry to hear that Korean is denying the usage of Chinese characters.
     Anyway, the book on the left was written emotionally and the evidence is vague. Reading this book was just like wasting time.
     See the second picture. These books are written by a history researcher after intensive research. I examined some evidence that the author took up in his book and I got to believe these books. I'd like to pay a tribute to Korean readers to give me a chance to learn about Korean history. I got shocked to know it. If I were the Korean president, I would be sure to hide the historical facts and never show it to Korean children. Korean history is such a history.
     When the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea was signed in 1965, Seoul didn't say anything about the issue of comfort women. Why did the issue show up now? It has been my biggest question. I know the book that triggered this issue, but the author of this book revealed later that he wrote it on speculation and no evidence. However the Koreans are continuing to blame Japan for this issue. Why? In fact there's a general idea on prostitution (sex for money) in Japan but no notion about obliged comfort women (kind of sex slavery).
     "Comfort women" was from the Korean culture. If you are Korean, please study your own history and culture. Examine every kind of record and figures sincerely. There remain many documents in China, your country and also Japan. Many travel writers left the documents for you. I don't want to offend you and write about this issue any more but I hope you'll stop shifting a lot of the responsibility on Japan. (和訳)

     Most e-mails acknowledge that my opinion is correct, but .... they change the topic and accuse Japan of doing various things. Some rebuttals were ridiculous and seemed to be kind of nursery rhymes, however a few criticisms raised some valid points that I couldn't answer promptly.
     Given this situation, I decided to study their history again. I studied world history in my high school days, but it was at the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895) that Korea showed up on the stage of  world history. The relationship between Japan and Korea was taught in my Japanese history class, but it was just relations between both countries, not a part of the world and very regional issues. My knowledge about Korean history before the 19th century was very fractional and poor. I didn't know about their way of life. It took about 3 weeks to roughly learn about it and you might imagine how hard it was learning after my daily work. However, never! I didn't feel any pain, even one iota. It's fun to acquire knowledge.
     I replied to all the e-mails in English. I coudn't help writing strong opinions sometimes, but I am happy to exchange opinions with people from other countries. I really realized that mass medias are not always correct and we are easily brainwashed.

     I hit upon an intersting idea reading these e-mails. I wonder why they don't want to add comments openly. If they do so, everyone could read their opinions. I found their deep psyche in some e-mails. It looked like they didn't want to agree with me in every situation. Their pride doesn't seem to let them acknowledge Japanese opinions. Pride goes before, and shame follows after.
     However, I admire their attitude in another sense. Their nationalism and patriotism are awesome. Japanese self-appointed liberal intellectuals blame Japan for doing something bad despite not having any secure evidence and many people support them. I can't understand their way of thinking.
     Korean people who express their affinity for Japan tend to be condemned. Such kind of patriotism is not good, but it's also a serious problem that many Japanese don't even have such patriotism.
     Nationalism and patriotism are totally described by one word, "aikokushin," in Japanese. Left wing groups insist that the word "aikokushin" shouldn't be taught to children. They raise their voices that "aikokushin" leads Japan to war.
     I think this is wrong. Actually, "nationalism" might be harmful for most Japanese, but "patriotism" is essential and necessary to all peoples. The Japanese educational system, planned by Douglas McArthur, teaches young people that "aikokushin" is a bad thing. We Japanese are brainwashed here too. (和訳)

Korean Textbook for Japanese People

     This entry was grammatically corrected by a native lady who agreed with my opinion. After I wrote that I had wanted to read the real Korean textbook because I thought it must be due to the education that Korean people had in their student days that they insisted on many things unreasonably. Eventually I found the book in the city library. This Korean textbook of history for junior high school students is translated into Japanese. The pictures show the front cover and some pages in it.
     More than 10 Korean people have often accessed this blog and I wanted to prepare one written in Korean for them, but I couldn't. Whatever, you Japanese would easily understand that it is not the individual Korean but the Korean government that is responsible for the deep division between both countries.
     I focused on 2 points in the textbook. One is about An Jung-geun (安重根 안중근) and the other is about Liancourt Rocks (竹島 다케시마(일본어)  독도  獨島)
     At first take a look at the second picture. You can magnify and read the textbook. What do you think about it? Some people whom we think of as terrorists from any angle are honored as kind of national heros. When such a biased education occurs during the low teens, the students would be brainwashed. I wonder why the Japanese government doesn't accuse them? On the other hand, the Korean government does the same with our textbook. I think they don't have room to criticize us. Japan shouldn't hold back against South Korea. I didn't know, but it looks like there was another terrorist act against an American. (written on the same page.)
     Next, I hope you'll access the following website if you can read Japanese or use the automatic translation system: (Korean people, I think, can easily read it, because Japanese grammar is extremely similar to Korean.

     The Korean government interprets their own historical documents in a distorted way many times, besides sometimes changing the content of their historical heritage, I mean, they are twisting things around. I'd like to describe only one thing here that I was the most afraid of.
     Take a look at the last picture. That is a page in the textbook. The content is like this: You can see Liancourt Rocks clearly from Ullungdo Island (鬱陵島 울릉도 うつりょうとう) with the naked eye if the weather is fine and that was written in an old document more than 100 years ago. (To tell the truth, these sentences indicate another island of the same name, but the government is twisting that fact.)
     By the way, is it possible? Liancourt Rocks (竹島 독도) is a rock rather than an island as you can see by the pictures of Liancourt Rocks on the above website. Its altitude is only 157 meters. Liancourt Rocks is 92 km away from Ullungdo Island(鬱陵島 울릉도). Can you clearly detect a rock 157 meters high in the ocean from a distance of 92 km with the naked eye. What do the students who live on Ullungdo Island think? They must have known that their government is officially lieing. Korean textbooks for teens acknowledges lying!
     I've found much more interesting things in this textbook, but I don't have enough time to show all of those. Anyway, I can declare with confidence that the Korean government has a serious responsibility about the Korean way of thinking against Japan.

Baekdu Mountain Airport (Changbai Shan Airport 長白山空港)

     A sad story came along. China seems to be building a new airport again at the border of North Korea, near 長白山 (Changbai Shan). The Chinese authorities say that the airport is for sight-seeing and would be connected to Beijing, Tsingtao, Dalian and Changchun at least until next summer. However from any angle the aim of the hasty construction would be for the diversion of the airport to military use in case of military tension. I'm afraid one of the most beautiful places in China could be polluted. 長白山 (Changbai Shan) is called 白頭山 (Paektu-San or Baekdu Mountain) in North Korea. See also here.
     This area has a complex history. There are some important and beautiful Korean remains. China says those monuments are their own, as usual, but they are apparently Korean (Goguryeo 高句麗). Chinese authorities, I think, lie just like exhaling their own breath. Tong Hua City (通化市) is located in this area. I'd like you to know an incident that happened here on Feb. 3rd in 1946. We Japanese have to remember this incident for more than 3000 victims who were killed by the Chinese Communists. (see here in Japanese!)
     Let me explain this incident. The Pacific War is supposed to be over on Aug. 15th in 1945. In fact, unbelievably, all the fights were over by the voice of the Emperor in most battle fields. Japanese soldiers threw their guns away on this day. However it was not the case in Hokkaido and China. I write about the case in China here.
     In China the roundup of Japanese was still happening a half year from the end of the war. Genocide of more than 3000 Japanese was committed in Tong Hua City (通化市) on Feb. 3rd 1946 by Chinese communists. I hope this incident will be in the public eye. Chinese authorities insist that they fought Japan in the Pacific War, but it is not true. It was the Kuomintang Party that fought Japan. Chinese communists were just hiding in the mountain and they started to fight around the end of the war. Besides, it was the Chinese communists that organized massacres against Japanese after the war. Many Japanese who were waiting to go back to Japan were cruelly killed. I want all of you to investigate this incident. Let's have knowledge based on the true evidence.

A House Visit

     I go out for some house visits on Friday every two weeks. The patient that I visited today is an 80 year old gentleman. He is being cared for by his wife. It is not easy to believe this story, but he survived two kinds of serious malignant diseases in his 50s. After that, he has been suffering from rare diseases one after another. His wife says that it must be due to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima.
     He was a teenager when the bomb was dropped. Hiroshima is three hours away from our town by ship. He seems to have gone to Hiroshima with his teachers and schoolmates to rescue people the day after the bomb. His role was to recover numerous bodies out of the river and find things to show their ID. If he could find the name of the body, he carried them to some places for the people looking for their relatives, friends and acquaintances. If he couldn't, however, he carried them to the Body Dump Station. The bodies were thrown into the fire. He and his group were working in Hiroshima for a few days. They wanted to work more, but they didn't have enough food to continue their volunteer work.
     People at that time didn't have any knowledge about the radiation. They didn't mind being exposed to residual radiation. Many people got invisibly injured like this. This fact is not widely known to the public.
     Researchers and developers of the atomic bomb seemed to predict that no trees and grasses could grow in Hiroshima for the next 50 years. This prediction was fortunately wrong, but was it necessary to drop such a cruel bomb on Hiroshima? If the U.S.  only wanted to stop the war, they should have dropped the bomb in the Tokyo Bay area. The Japanese authorities, including the Emperor, would directly have seen the mushroom cloud. One more thing, I'd like to ask Mr. Truman the reason why the U.S. chose Hisoshima and Nagasaki as victims of the atomic bomb; a wide city around which they could draw concentric circles in the horizontal area and a city that is closed by mountains on one side and open in the direction of the sea. Both geographic locations must have been attractive for the researchers of radiation.

Welcome Back Party

     I wrote about a female medical student in Romania in another entry.
     She came back to Japan during her summer vacation the other day. Acquaintances of her parents got together and had a welcome back party for her, though her parents were on a business trip to the U.S. and were absent.
     She had just finished her medical practice in a hospital in Bulgaria. I could hear many things about Romania and Bulgaria from her. Almost all of her stories were new to us and enjoyable. The picture shows us together.
     When Ceausescu was alive, Romania seemed to be just like North Korea. However, Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007. Romania, along with Bulgaria, might be the poorest countries in the EU now, but they seem to be developing at a remarkable pace. I wish her success in the EU.

     There must have been some deal between Truman and Stalin when Soviet troops changed course to the South Kurile Islands instead of invading Hokkaido on Aug. 22nd in 1945. The details of the deal are still a mystery.
     Now I'm going to write about the Japanese Army that defended the Kurile Islands. This army has not been written about in the Japanese textbook of history, but this 6th army group had fought against the Soviet troops on Shumushu island (占守島 Russian name 【о.Шумшу】)  and other northern Kurile Islands from Aug. 18th to 22nd in 1945. The Japanese Army had been on a winning streak in each combat. I imagine that these defeats for the Soviets were relayed to Moscow and made Stalin change his mind. That is to say, Stalin must have got to think it would not be easy to invade and occupy Hokkaido. Consequently, he modified his target from Hokkaido itself to the South Kurile Islands and the long-time custody of Japanese prisoners of war in Siberia.
     It is commonly believed that the Greater East Asian War was over on Aug. 15th in 1945. It's because the Emperor's declaration was issued on this day. It was admirable that the Emperor's order swept across all the battlefields in the chaos of the war, but we should remember the war that started after the declaration. It was a real defensive war.
     As soon as the initial report of the invasion of Soviet troops was brought to Lt. Gen. Kiichirou Higuchi in Sapporo, he ordered the island to be defended, even though it was after the declaration of the end of the war. Responding to his order, the Ikeda tank regiment started firing back. Their blistering counter attack was beyond the Soviets' expectations. This regiment bought time and Hokkaido was saved. If this regiment hadn't been in the Kurile Islands, what would have become of Hokkaido? I don't want to imagine it.
     Many Japanese people and some people in the Congress visit the Yasukuni Shrine every Aug. 15th. I'd like to advance a suggestion that we should change the visit date to Aug. 22nd. Then the Prime Minister can explain the reason. If this was done, I hope that many Japanese people will come to think more seriously about the defense of the country.

　昭和２０年８月２２日、北海道にいつでも上陸できる状態にあったソ連軍が、南千島へ転進した背景には、トルーマンとスターリンの間に何らかの取引があったと見るのが妥当だろう。それが何であるかは今もって謎であるが、ここでは千島列島を防衛した日本軍のすばらしい働きを書きたい。

　日本の歴史教科書には書かれていないが、８月１８日から２２日まで日本軍第六方面軍が占守島(シュムシュ島)（ロシア名【о.Шумшу】）など北千島でソ連軍と戦い、個々の戦闘では勝ち続けていた。ソ連にとって予想外の大敗北がモスクワに伝えられて、北海道占領に燃えるスターリンの心を変えさせたのではないだろうか。彼は北海道を簡単に占領できると考えていたはずだからである。スターリンはこの苦戦により、千島列島の確保と関東軍捕虜のシベリア抑留へと目標を変更したと考えられる。

　日本では昭和２０年８月１５日に大東亜戦争は終わったと思われている。この日に終戦の詔書が発せられたからである。あの混乱の時期に、詔書を戦場の隅々にまで徹底させたのは、みごとというしかないが、８月１５日以降に始まった本当の意味の「日本防衛戦争」を忘れてはいけない。

　ソ連侵攻の第一報を受け、終戦後ではあったが戦闘を指示した樋口季一郎中将。これに応えて、ソ連軍に猛烈な逆襲を繰り出した池田戦車連隊。スターリンにとって不運だったのは、この戦車隊が当時の精鋭部隊だったことである。この守備隊が時間稼ぎをしてくれたおかげで、北海道本島の占領は辛くも免れたのだ。この戦車隊の活躍がなければ、いったい今の日本はどうなっていたことか。北海道はソ連の一部になっていたことは間違いない。この戦闘指示を出した施設を一昨年、ツーリングの途中で見てきた。（もちろん外からだけだが。)

　首相による靖国神社公式参拝の是非が戦後議論されてきた。首相が靖国神社へ８月１５日に公式参拝すると中国や南北朝鮮からいわれのない批判を受けるのであるが、参拝の日をいっそのこと８月２２日に変更してはどうかと思う。 「なぜ８月２２日なのか」を首相が説明すれば、日本人はもう少し国防について真剣に考えるようになるのではないだろうか。

     Thirdly, Russian amphibious operation against Hokkaido actually came into practice and operational units showed up off the shore of Rumoi City, which is located on the west coast of Hokkaido. If Stalin hadn't changed his mind, Hokkaido would have easily been occupied because the U.S. Army wasn't there to deal with the invasion.
     However, something happened on Aug. 22th and Russian troops stopped landing and changed their course. They headed for the south Kurile Islands round the north of Hokkaido until early on 23rd in order to occupy those islands.
     Besides, on the same day, an illegal order was issued, which imposed a tragic blow on Japanese captives. More than 600,000 Japanese war prisoners in Manchuria were promised to be sent to Japan in the Potsdam Declaration, but they were sent to Siberia for forced labor. No doubt these two policies have something to do with each other. What made Stalin change his mind? It is still a mystery.
     Russian military action against Japan continued until Sep. 5th and they finally ended up occupying not only the south Kurile Islands but also Shikotan island and the Habomai islands, which belong to Hokkaido.
     Next time I'm going to write my opinion about Stalin's change of mind.

　第三の事実は、この水陸両方の作戦が実際に行動に移され、実戦部隊が留萌市沖に現れたことだ。もし、スターリンの考えが変わらなければ北海道は簡単に占領されていただろう。この侵攻に対応できるだけの米軍は当時北海道にはいなかのだ。

　しかし、何ごとかが起こって８月２２日ソ連軍は上陸を取りやめ、矛先を転じた。ソ連軍は北海道の北を回って２３日早朝には南千島へ達したのだ。これらの島々を占領するためである。

　さらに同日、日本人捕虜に対して悲劇とも言える非合法な命令が下された。満州で拘束されたポツダム宣言で日本に帰ることを約束されていた６０万人以上もの日本人捕虜はシベリアに送られ、強制労働を強いられたのである。（これは日本が受諾したポツダム宣言に明らかに違反しているが連合国側は黙認した。）

　これら２つの政策がお互いに関連しているとみて間違いはないだろう。何がスターリンを変心させたか、いまだ謎のままである。

　ソ連の南千島での軍事行動は９月５日まで続いた。そしてついにソ連は南千島だけでなく色丹島、歯舞諸島までも占領してしまった。色丹島と歯舞諸島は北海道に所属する。

　次回はスターリンの心変わりについて持論を書いてみたい。

     Japan surrendered unconditionally to the U.S. and its alliance and World War Two ended on Aug. 15th in 1945. This is written in the Japanese textbook of history. The Atomic bombing was meant to end the war as soon as possible. This is the word of Truman against Japan. To my surprise, the Japanese Minister of Defense said the same thing and caused a controversy this summer. Even the Japanese Minister of Defense is brainwashed by U.S.-planned education. I couldn't believe my ears. See also this entry.

     I'd like to insist that Japanese must learn about the modern history of Japan, China and both Koreas. The textbooks should be based on secure evidence.

     Secondly, while the U.S. stopped fighting at noon on Aug. 15th, Russia issued an order on Aug. 18th to occupy the northern half of Hokkaido (north of the line connecting Rumoi City and Kushiro City) and the southern half of the Kurile Islands by Sep. 1st.
     It was the payback of Stalin. He demanded that Russia should occupy that area on Aug. 16th but Truman sarcastically refused. In other words, Russia's request to occupy Hokkaido was issued on the day after Aug. 15th when Japan surrendered. The atomic bombing couldn't have been the reason for the Russian request.

　日本はアメリカとその同盟国により無条件降伏をさせられ、第二次世界大戦は１９４５年８月１５日に終わったと、日本の歴史教科書に書かれている。また、原子爆弾はできるだけ早く戦争を終わらせるために使われたとある。これは実は歴史的事実などではなく、当時のアメリカ大統領トルーマンの言葉である。
　ところが驚いたことに、日本の防衛大臣が同じことを言い、この夏物議を醸した。防衛大臣までもがアメリカによって画策された教育により洗脳されているのだ。彼が話すのを聞き、自分の耳を疑った。アメリカ人に事実を説明することもあろうかと、この記事を書いている。次の記事も参考にされたい。

　第二の事実として挙げたいのは、アメリカが８月１５日の正午をもって戦闘を中止した一方で、ソ連は８月１８日北海道の北半分(留萌と釧路をを結ぶ線から北)と南千島を占拠せよと言う命令を発したことだ。
　これはスターリンのしっぺ返しだったのだろう。彼は８月１６日、同地域を占領することを連合国側に要求したのだがトルーマンはこれを拒否した。言い換えれば、ソ連が北海道を要求したのは日本が降伏した８月１５日以降であり、原子爆弾がソ連の要求を退けるためという理由にはならないことになる。
　われわれの受けた戦後教育はなんと欺瞞に満ちたものだったのだろうか。
