Police Radar Detector

　　My Tesla Model 3, Ryuseigo, has superb acceleration. I've seen several movies on YouTube in which Model 3 and what you call a super car, whose price is over 200,000US$, vie with each other in acceleration, and Model 3 is always on a par with its rivals or outruns them.
　　When I drive comfortably on a quiet road in countryside, I often find myself driving faster than regulation. I think I would be surely caught by police some day, so I decided to equip Ryuseigo with a police radar detector. Various kinds of detectors were on the shelves in a parts shop, and I chose one after advice on the internet.
　　I'm hopeless about mechanical stuff and had it installed. The detector has a GPS-receiver built-in and works very well.

CHAdeMO

　　CHAdeMO is the trade name of a quick charging method of EVs. Ryuusei-goh, which is the nickname of my tesla model 3, has been charged in my home, but I utilized CHAdeMO for the first time away from home. As you know from the following pictures, it requires a special adaptor to connect the car and the charger, and it looks a little strange. This type of charger is found everywhere in Japan and is handy, but it takes more charging time than the tesla supercharger. I hope for the prompt development of the tesla supercharger network.

CHAdeMOというのはEV（電気自動車）の急速充電方法の商標名。流星号(僕のモデル３にニックネーム）はいつも自宅充電だったが、外出先で初めてCHAdeMOを使ってみた。写真でわかるとおり、アダプターを付けなければいけないのでなんとも妙な具合に写っているが、これで正常。この充電器は至るところにあるので便利だが、テスラ専用充電器に比べると遅い。テスラのスーパーチャージャーのネットワークの充実が待たれる。

Tohri-ike Pond

　　Shimojijima Island is tiny and flat. The island has no high terrain and structures, so the island would be suitable for commercial pilots' landing and taking-off training. On the other hand, there are two Tohri-ike ponds for the general tourists. If you translate them into English literally, they would be "Through-pond". Two ponds, called Tohri-ike, connect with each other underwater and one of them with the sea. I saw similar holes on Kauai island (link). The process of the island formation in ancient times would be alike.
　　Distinguishing rocks were scattered around. I'm not familiar with rock science, but I hadn't seen such rocks in my hometown. I noticed two airport-related facilities far away and wanted to walk around to the end of the runway under the clear sky in the sea breeze, but I didn't have enough time for that, because I wanted to visit one more island, Ikemajima. After seeing Tohri-ike ponds, I left for Ikemajima island, but I couldn't help returning just in front of the bridge connecting Miyakojima and Ikemajima islands. Considering the time for returning the car and moving time from the car rental shop to the pier, I had to do a U-turn there.
　　The return shuttle to the Diamond Princess was not so crowded as the shuttle boat which we had ridden in the morning. I investigated some equipment in the tender boat. I was surprised and then understood a device for collecting rainwater in order to use it as drinking water. The boat seemed to be able to seal up to prevent seawater from coming in the cabin.

下地島は平坦で小さい島である。空港の周りには視界を遮るものは何も無いから離着陸の訓練には向いているのだろう。その空港の西側にこの島唯一と言っても良い観光スポットがある。地下でそれぞれが、そして海と繋がっている池があり、通り池という。文字通り英語に訳すなら『Through-Pond』とでも訳せようか。同じような構造の穴をカウアイ島でも見た。島の成り立ちが似ているのだろう。

このあたりには特徴的な岩がゴロゴロしている。岩石に詳しくはないが、少なくとも愛媛でこのような岩を見たことが無い。平らな土地の向こうに空港施設の一部が見える。天気は良いし、心地よい海風が吹いている。滑走路の方まで散策したかったのだが、時間が十分無い。もう一つ渡りたい島が残っているのだ。その島、池間島に向けて出発したのだが、レンタカーを返却し、港まで向かう時間を考えると、島へ渡ることは諦めざるを得なかった。池間大橋の手前でUターン。宮古島、また来ることもあるだろう。

帰りのテンダーボートは上陸時よりは空いていた。雨水を採取して飲み水にする装置など、遭難時の設備が珍しかった。いろいろなことを想定して設計されているのだろう。

Installation of Winter Tires

　　My hometown is in the southern half of Japan and hasn't so much snowfall every year, but it sometimes snows. Some people don't drive in snowy weather, but I use my car in commuting, so I had to exchange the original tires to winter tires in case of sudden snowfall. Then a problem occurred.
　　The Tesla car company had started to take orders of its Model 3 from Japan on May 31st and its delivery began at the end of August. In such a situation, the information of its optional parts wasn't enough. I ordered four winter tires from my familiar shop, but they didn't choose any suitable aluminium wheel for Model 3 because of the lack of information. Though I ordered them before the delivery of my car, they weren't able to decide which one is to be prepared. I inquired about the stock of wheels to Tesla's delivery center, but they hadn't. Moreover, even if I order them from Tesla, it would take 3 or 4 months to receive them. I wouldn't need them in spring. I had completely no idea what to do.
　　My familiar shop is an authorized Bridgestone dealer and searched for the example in Hokkaido via the Bridgestone network, because Hokkaido gets winter considerably earlier than in my hometown. The shop's idea worked out! Finally they found a domestic wheel which could be attached to the Model 3.

Cinderella Story

　　You surely know the Cinderella Story. Also in Japan that surely existed in reality.
　　A poor girl who was born in a vegetable shop in Kyoto in the early 17th century married into the Tokugawa clan. She finally became the real mother of the 4th Shogun of Edo Shogunate (1603-1867). She went into the castle on a beautiful palanquin, which is called "Tama no Koshi" in Japanese and this phrase is now often used to describe a girl who got a good fortune in marriage.
　　She is said to have often visited a shrine to pray for happiness for her family. The shrine is now selling several kinds of charms and one of them is "Tama no Koshi" charm for girls who wish for affluent and happy lives. My friend has two daughters and I have three. We visited the shrine to get the charms. (grin)

Last Drive

　　I drove my car for fun in the central region of Shikoku. This mountainous area has the biggest dam in Shikoku, which sustains the population of Kagawa Prefecture. Japan is listed as one of the industrial countries, but Japan is rich also in such rural scenery. I'm going to part with my Mercedes SLK200 soon and this will be the last long drive with it. When driving, an unfamiliar sound from the air suddenly caught my ear. My car was open at that time. I pulled up my car and looked up and found 3 or 4 ospreys were flying from south to north. I've seen more than 10 ospreys parked in the Futenma Air Station in Okinawa. I wish I could ride on them!

Replacement of Battery

　　I visited a car dealer of Daihatsu to replace the battery of my second car of BOON, which was originally owned by my youngest daughter who is now studying in Oxford. It's a little small and my wife usually uses it, but it's my obligation to keep it in good condition during the daughter's absence.
　　The following picture shows the waiting room of the car dealer. The customers spend some time waiting for the maintenance work to finish. Non-alcoholic beverages and Wi-Fi are offered here for free. I like the relaxing atmosphere around here in contrast to the waiting room of the Mercedes dealer, where I get restless with its luxurious feel.
　　

Charging System Installation

　　I had the Tesla's charging system installed. The electricity line to my house is put together with that of cable TV, internet and security service into a single pole which is connected to the house via underground and is shown in the first picture. This pole is designed to make the appearance of the house better. I don't know its name in English, but I hope you'll understand my words from the picture.
　　The problem was how to connect between the pole and the wall of the garage on which the charging system was to be installed. The ground is concreted and digging up would be costly. The solution was to put up another pole near the garage and to make the electric line train in the air. You can see the electric line connecting two poles loosely in the 5th picture. This line doesn't come in sight when you stand in front of the house. It's nice that it doesn't affect the appearance of the house. The line was buried from the second pole and reached the wall. The installation work took two days and I'm fully satisfied with their work. I'm just waiting for the delivery of Tesla Model 3.

Wall Connector

　　I have stayed in Honolulu for a week every year recently. While staying last year, I happened to see and enter the Tesla shop in the International Marketplace on Kalakaua Avenue without any special reason. Tesla Model S and X were exhibited. A salesman suggested I drive one. I had driven a left-side steering car about 20 years ago, but hadn't driven one since then. Though I had a little anxiety, he encouraged me to drive their car and test-drove a model X. The car was out of this world. It was my first time to drive an electric car. No engine meant no noise. Its power was beyond my expectation. The salesman was a nice guy and told me lots of interesting stories about Hawaii just like a tour conductor. The drive with him was fun. I wanted to have a Tesla car, but its price was also beyond my purchasing power.
　　By the way, this year. I visited Hawaii in June and dropped in at the shop. I found a model 3 which they had started to offer into Japan's market on June 1st. I test-drove it and was captivated by its overall function. On top of that, I was barely able to afford to do it, but I decided to buy a Tesla model 3. It became the most expensive souvenir to me in my life.
　　Today, I got its charging equipment, Wall Connector. I can't wait for the delivery of my model 3.

Numb

I was totally numb today:
　　An old university acquaintance, who was a few years senior to me, asked me to do some work in his hospital last week. He and I spent a few years together on the same campus, and he often helped me on various occasions. Currently, he runs a hospital in Hiroshima Prefecture and suffers from the shortage of surgeons. I decided to join his surgical team as a part-time surgeon at his request today. I headed for his hospital by car.
　　I dropped in at Kurushima Kaikyo Rest Area to take a short rest on the way to the destination. The following pictures were taken at that time. The bridges in the pictures connect Honshu and Shikoku. Anyway, I found several full body massage chairs set in the resting room, and anyone was allowed to freely use them within 15 minutes. I took one of them and got a massage. Its mechanical massage was really relaxing and before you know it, I fell asleep. I put my personal bag aside before the massage and when I stood up from the chair, I forgot to take it. After one hour's drive, I found that I had left my bag there. I was totally numb as several valuables were in the bag. I immediately called the information desk of the Area and knew that someone had already taken my bag to the desk. I didn't know his/her name, but I was really grateful.

大学時代の先輩から手術の応援を依頼され、広島県へ向かう途中、四国から広島県へ渡る直前のサービスエリアで休憩を取った。写真はそのときに撮ったもの。ここに疲れたドライバー用に無料のマッサージ椅子があった。一人１５分まで使えたので利用することにした。そのとき、肩から掛けていたボディバッグを椅子の横へ置いて、そのまま忘れてサービスエリアを出てしまった。１時間後に気づいた。サービスエリアへ電話をしたら、誰かが届けてくれて保管されていた。助かった～～　中には現金、クレジットカードなど貴重品だらけ。現金は良いとして、免許証やらクレジットカードなどが盗られたら後の手続きがめんどい。どこの誰かはわからないが、発見者の善意に感謝！

POCKETALK™

　　I've been hearing of pocketalk™. In case you are wondering, it's a translator gadget. It seemed to be able to handle 74 languages, but I didn't have any interest in it at all.
　　However, I had to buy it the other day, because several Chinese came to often visit my office. They are from Dalian and are staying for two years near my office to work in some factories. They are ordinary people and can't speak in English or Japanese, naturally. They can ask for an official interpreter at every consultation, but it's costly. I'm learning Mandarin now for the next trip, but my Chinese skills are not enough to use in medical conversations. The pocketalk™ was an answer eventually.
　　This is surely helpful even in the consultation room, but I found that it's very handy also for learning languages. Chinese pronunciation is unique and difficult for non-natives, and learners don't know if their pronunciation is correct, or not. Yes, I'm using this for my learning. I speak to this in Chinese or other languages sometimes. If my pronunciation is correct, it answers back a correct translation in Japanese. I recommend this for foreign language learners.

Suitcase Damaged

　　I found that the wheels of my suitcase were broken when receiving it at Honolulu airport. It was the second time. The first time was in the airport of Munich or Firenze. The handling of the luggage overseas, I feel, is rougher than in Japan. Anyway, I had time at night and sent an e-mail along with some pictures of the suitcase to ask my insurance agent if the damage would be covered by my insurance. The prompt reply told me that the damage was under the coverage. I had just only to pay the transport fee from my house to the repair center of GLOBE-TROTTER near Tokyo. 6 years have passed since I bought this suitcase, but it looks like brand-new and works well. Wonderful!

スーツケースのタイヤが破損した。日本の空港だと何も起こらないのに、海外での扱いは乱暴なのだろうか？夜ちょっと時間ができたので写真を撮って保険を請求してみた。 そしたらなんと全額保証された。自宅から、GLOBE-TROTTERのリペアセンターまでの往復の費用は負担しなければならないが、タイヤを新品に交換してくれるという。良かった。記録を見るとこのスーツケースを購入して６年になるが、いまだに新品同様。ありがたい。

Kauai and Niihau Islands

　　Soon after taking off, Kauai island came into my sight and I was able to roughly understand the whole terrain of Kauai island. On the other hand, Niihau island is off limits to the public and I barely saw the faint outlines of the island from Kauai island, so I wanted to look down on the island from the sky, but the island was just below my plane. I wasn't able to see the island. It was some time later that I recalled that the A380 had a camera for looking downward. I'm going to use this camera on the next flight to Oahu.
　　Arriving at Narita Airport, it was raining. As I spent a week in the scorching heat of the tropical island, I felt the rain somehow fresh. I found an emerald-green A380, one of three Flying Honus, sitting on the hardstand. I heard it would start flying a few weeks later. Eventually, three Flying Honus will be in service between Narita and Honolulu. The flight was really comfortable this time and I was already looking forward to flying into Hawaii with a Flying Honu next year.
　　Lastly I'll show you pictures of Tokyo Skytree and Mt. Fuji taken from there on the next day. Mt. Fuji was shot so clearly, and it was apparently rare. We were lucky.

離陸後すぐにカウアイ島が見えてきた。ワイメア渓谷州立公園の全体像が見えた。が、見たかったニイハウ島は飛行機の真下になり見えず。ただ、しばらくして気がついた。この飛行機には真下を見るカメラが付いていていつでも下の景色を見ることができたことを。これもまた次回の楽しみにしておこう。
成田へ到着すると雨。南国の強い日差しの中で過ごした後だけに、ただの雨だが新鮮に感じた。ハワイ滞在中には雨は全く降らなかった。駐機場にはエメラルドグリーンのFlying Honu２号機が駐まっていた。来年もＡ３８０で行きたいな。

Return Flight

　　The last day: We moved to the airport by the usual taxi. Our return flight was an A380 dubbed Flying Honu which meant turtle in Hawaiian. When having left Japan, I saw it, but it was already dark. Taking a close look in the daylight, its face was really cute. I thought that this series of three planes would attract lots of passengers. Currently, the fight to gain customers on the Japan-Hawaii line between the two biggest companies of Japan Airline(JAL) and All Nippon Airways(ANA) broke out. The eye-catchers of ANA were the Flying Honu and the newly-built lounge in Honolulu Airport. This lounge offered lots of dishes and beverages for their passengers and was equipped with facilities for kids and quiet areas for sleepers and those who wanted to spend time silently. Additionally, the washroom would be the cleanest on Oahu island. You can see the taking-off and landing planes from the lounge. This place would be paradise for plane nerds like me. Honolulu Airport is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is the hub airport of the Ocean. I was able to see various planes from all over the world. Then ANA's competitor of JAL just arrived in Honolulu and appeared abruptly in front of me. Its fuselage was decorated with the faces of the Japanese music group, "Arashi". It was also gorgeous, but looked small against the backdrop of the enormous A380.

帰国の日 

いつものドライバーに迎えに来てもらい空港へ。帰りももちろん空飛ぶウミガメ号で。明るいところで間近に見ると、実に可愛いイラストが描かれている。これは人気が出るだろうなあと思う。実は今日本では、日本を代表する航空会社２社でハワイ路線の乗客の獲得合戦が始まっている。ＡＮＡの目玉がこのＡ３８０と新設されたラウンジ。このラウンジ、料理や飲み物が充実していることは当たり前として、子供専用スペースや、一人静かにくつろぐ場所などがある。トイレはおそらく、オアフ島で一番清潔できれいだと思う。また離着陸する飛行機がよく見える。飛行機好きにはたまらない。太平洋に浮かぶハブ空港。いろいろな国の飛行機がやって来ている。と、その時、対抗するＪＡＬの嵐ジェット登場。人気グループ嵐を機体に描いた機材。ライバルのＡＮＡラウンジの目の前に付けるところ、たいしたものだと思うが、並べると機体の大きさの差は歴然。

Tesla Model 3 and Magic of Polynesia

　　I jogged slowly along Kalakaua Street and the Ala Wai Canal before breakfast. My speed might not be called jogging, but I believe it was faster than walking, maybe. Anyway, I appreciated my friends who gave me the joy of running. After breakfast, we visited the Tesla dealer shop. To tell the truth, I had already booked the test-driving of model 3 on 8th. I got along well with a salesperson last year and I just wanted to say hello and "I came back to Hawaii again" to him at that time. However, as soon as I saw a Tesla Model 3 displayed in the shop, I was fascinated and came to test-drive it today. I drove a model x last year and its function concerning the automated driving was beyond my imagination. I knew that the sales of model 3 had started in this June IN JAPAN. The test-driving was only for 40 minutes, but it was enough for me to learn its additional evolution of automated driving.
　　The pictures of tesla cars below were shot on the next day during shopping for souvenirs. I wanted to look and see the real colour and its atmosphere. Why....? Yes, I decided to buy one on this night of test-driving. My present car, a Mercedes-Benz SLK200, is considerably flashy and I would have the next one a little quiet and chose a black one. One thing, my wife didn't know that at that time. She must have been wondering why I came to this parking lot. I get scared with her stern look, so I have to figure out lots of excuses from now.
　　We made an easy non-walking sightseeing from a trolley in the afternoon. The pictures taken from inside the trolley were really good as the weather was clear and the trolley has no windows. No one would assume that these pictures were shot from the car. After getting off, I found surfboard lockers for the first time and I'll show you them below.
　　The last event of today was the Magic of Polynesia. This magic show was apparently very famous in Hawaii. One of my friends invited us and we knew about the show. The dinner was great and the show deprived us of mutual conversation. Coming back to my condominium, still basking in the comfortable and mysterious afterglow of Polynesian magic and dance, I found myself clicking the order button on the Tesla's website over a glass of wine. My simple visiting the dealer resulted in a costly souvenir. Was that ok? Don't care! Just invent excuses! (As for the magic show, picture taking was not permitted.)

朝は軽くジョギング。歩くよりは速いけど、走っているとは言えないほどのゆっくりスピードでカラカウア通り～運河沿いを観光。走ることを教えてくれた仲間に感謝。そして朝食後、テスラのディーラーへ。実は８日の午後、散歩の途中でテスラ試乗の予約していたのだ。８日はセールス担当のスタッフとどこか気が合うので、一年ぶりにまた来たよと挨拶程度に寄ったのだが、モデル３が展示してあり、なんとなく試乗することに。去年はモデルＸに乗り、１時間半ほどのドライブ。その機能に仰天し、今回は今月(６月)から日本向けの販売が始まったモデル３に乗ってみた。約４０分の試乗だったが、更に進化している自動運転機能と維持費の安さに驚愕した。

下に載せている写真は翌日のショッピングの途中、色見に寄ったときに撮ったもの。色見？そう、買うことにしたのですよ。試乗した夜にオンラインで独断で勢いで申し込んでしまった。１週間以内なら自由に変更できるので色を確認したが、地味に黒で行こうと思う。ただ、この時点でカミさんには内緒。恐ろしくてどう話して良いものか分からない。車が届くまでに言い訳を考えればいいかな。(^_^;)

午後はレアレアトロリーで楽ちんな市内見物。撮った写真は全てトロリーから撮ったもの。天気は快晴で窓がないから車内から撮ったとは思えないほどクリアな写真になった。ワイキキを歩いていてサーフボードロッカーを見つけたので一枚撮影。こんなの初めて見た。

そして夜、今回の旅の目玉の一つ。マジック・オブ・ポリネシアというマジックショー。とても有名なマジシャンによるショー。名前からして日系人かな。豪華なディナーの後、言葉を忘れるほどの不思議さに圧倒された。観客を巻き込んだショーはやはりプロ中のプロのマジシャンだった。この余韻に浸りつつ、部屋でワインを飲んでいて、エイヤーっとクリックしてしまった結果がテスラ、、、あ～～こんなんで良いのか？高価なハワイ土産になってしまった。（マジックに関しては撮影禁止でした。素晴らしいショーは頭の中に記憶しました。）

Soto Zen Temple

　There was a temple of Zen Buddhism adjacent to the armory which I stepped into in all innocence. I asked our tour guide about this temple later, and a funny story came back. The Buddhist monk of the temple originally came from Kitami city which is located on the Okhotsk coast of Hokkaido. He visited his hometown apparently in winter and he told her that Kitami city wasn't suitable for human life. All of us laughed to hear that. It's natural for him, the inhabitant of Kauai island, to think so.
　We had some time before lunch and our minivan headed for a coffee shop run by a local coffee farm. I happened to see a Tesla car passing by us on the way. I really want to have one now. The car was Model X, whose cost was about $120,000 and beyond my reach. To tell the truth, I test-drove it last year in Honolulu and I had been fascinated. It's very rare in my hometown, but I often see them in Honolulu. It's U.S.-made and my frequent encounter with them might be natural. I'm writing about the shop in the next entry.

そうとは知らず立ち入った武器庫の隣には曹洞宗のお寺があった。後でガイドに尋ねると、ここの住職は北海道の北見市出身で近頃一時帰国したらしい。たまたま真冬だったらしく、あそこは人の住む土地では無いと言っていたという。それを聞いて一同爆笑。確かにカウアイ島に住んでいたら北見市は地獄に近かったろう。

さて、ランチに行く前にすこし時間があるという。それで地元のコーヒー生産農家がやっているコーヒーショップへ寄ることになった。道中テスラを発見し撮影した。地元松山市では滅多に見ないのだが、ハワイでは時折見かける。アメリカ産だから当たり前か？。

My Condominium

　　The following picture shows my condominium. I brought a wide angle lens this time and was able to shoot this picture. Don't you think, it's beautiful? Then I used my whole sky camera inside the room. I'll upload below. Our today's task was not to sleep, i.e., the recovery from the jet lag. We left our luggage at the Bell Desk and went out to Ala Moana Center to have lunch. After lunch at Japan Village Walk run by a Japanese company, I was going to go and see downtown, but my wife wanted to sleep, so we went back. I happened to see an amphibious bus on the way. Lots of tour buses come to this point, just in front of Ilikai Hotel. Honolulu is surely, I believe, one of the best resorts in the world.

写真は宿泊するコンドミニアム。今回は一眼レフカメラには広角レンズを付けてきた。なので去年までは撮れなかったこんな写真が撮れた。室内は全天カメラで撮影。次に、眠気をごまかすためにトロリーでアラモアナセンターへ向かった。Japan Village Walk（白木屋が経営)でランチ。ここからダウンタウン方面へ向かう予定だったが、カミさんは眠くてたまらないというのでいったんコンドミニアムへ戻る。途中で水陸両用車の観光ツアーを見かけた。ハワイにはこれでもかと言わんばかりの無数のツアーがある。間違いなく、世界でも指折りのリゾートだ。

Departure

　　I'll fly to Hawaii for the first time in a year today! The departure flight is from Narita, not Haneda this time. After wandering in the duty-free shopping area I visited the ANA lounge. The first picture was shot in the entrance of the lounge. It's the Boeing 787 with the coloring of Star Wars related stuff. Taking a close look, several signatures were written on it. I found Harrison Ford's on the right engine. Some subscribers ask me to attach the Japanese translation when the entry is about trips, so I upload the entry with it for some time from now.

Muscle Training

　　I'll write about my muscle training which I started in December, 2016. When I was washing my car with a pair of sandals on, I accidentally hit my left foot against the wall, and my fifth toe was broken. I had to stop jogging at that time, and I started muscle training alternatively. I intended to just make up for the jogging until the recovery, but that muscle training has continued until today. I saw lots of patients as a general surgeon who tripped on small bumps and broke their bones. These accidents are from the weakness of their muscles. That's why I continued my muscle training after the recovery from the fracture.
　　By the way, I got a whole sky camera the other day, and took some snapshots of my training room with that camera. I'll show you under the permission of my trainer.

Wide Angle Lens

　　I've been learning online how to shoot pictures artistically. I've used a standard lens for these six months and learned its angle of view and other characteristics. I got accustomed to it and bought a wide angle lens recently. I'm visiting Oahu island during this summer vacation and I'd like to shoot lots of beautiful scenes there.
