25th Anniversary of Sister City Treaty

　　My hometown, Matsuyama City entered into a sister city treaty with the southern German city of Freiburg 25 years ago, so this year is a quarter century anniversary. Several officials, including the mayor and city council members of Matsuyama City, and a few dozen citizens are planning to make official visits to Freiburg to attend the event comemorating the 25th anniversary.
　　Today, citizens of Matsuyama City who had an interest in Germany got together and enjoyed German wines and gorgeous dishes to get to know each other better. Some of them would visit Freiburg in November. Additionally three students from Freiburg were invited to the party. They could speak in Japanese and seemed to enjoy chatting with people who love Germany. So many topics were mentioned. One of them really wanted to climb Mt. Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan and recently listed as a World Natural Heritage Site. I'm not sure now, but if several people wanted, I'd arrange the climbing plan next summer. Climbing is one of my hobbies. Freiburg seemingly has a cold climate at this time of the year. I could imagine how cold it is from the latitude of Freiburg, which is no less than 4 degrees in latitude further north than Japan's northern city of Sapporo. For your information Matsuyama City is located in the southern part of Japan and is relatively warm except in January and February. I'm afraid my possessions will become more and more, because of lots of winter clothes.

German Fair

　　My hometown of Matsuyama City has been the sister city of the German city of Freiburg for 25 years, which is located in the south-western part of Germany. I've been to the city twice. The city is near the border with Switzerland and France, and so I visited Basel crossing into Switzerland and also Alsace-Lorraine Province and its capital of Strasbourg, stepping into France. Naturally I began to feel some affinity for Freiburg and southern Germany.
　　By the way, do you know Jazz Chor Freiburg, a chorus group consisting of the citizens of Freiburg. The group's Japan Tour was conducted this year and they dropped in at my city after a three years' interval. On the occasion of their visit, Matsuyama City held a PR event for Germany and particularly Freiburg. I was asked to take part in the event as a member of the Matsuyama-Freiburg Association. My task was to chat with people who were interested in Germany and if possible to collect new members. As you see in the following pictures, there were several concessions which sold various goods related to Germany. Some members of Jazz Chor Freiburg suddenly appeared at a corner of the event park and performed a few cuts from their concert just before the opening of the concert.
　　I heard that Matsuyama City would dispatch a municipal official envoy to Freiburg marking the 25th anniversary of their sister city treaty and recruit its members. I wonder if I should apply for it.

White Beer

　　Do you know white beer? I didn't know about it. The picture is of the white beer (Weissbier in German). In the same way as there is white and red wine, does beer have such a kind? This beer was also from my second daughter. It seems to be made from wheat. I drank it last February, but I saw it on a German educational TV program. That's why I posted the picture.

Shoes Repair

　　I'll write about my favorite shoes again, which I bought in 2009 and have been using for 3 years now. I walked along the streets in Germany twice and Canada once. I asked the shop master for a repair for the third time. This time, resoling of the heels, the replacement of both strips with Velcro tape and minimal adjustment of the inner soles were my order. The master faithfully performed my order, and my shoes were resurrected. Their original price was considerably high, but I think it's reasonable to be able to use my favorite ones for a long time.

German Test

　　There are various officially managed language tests for the public to encourage people to acquire languages of their choice. Some goal-oriented people take the tests and aim for the higher level step by step. I am one of those people and I underwent the German test today for the 4th grade. The language skill levels are roughly categorized into 5 levels. The 5th grade is the beginner's level and as the number diminishes, the difficulty level soars.
　　Just after the test, I'm convinced of the success of the test. On the way back I dropped in at a bookstore and bought the books in the picture below. They are  Korean and German textbooks. I'm going to challenge the Korean 3rd grade, one level higher than I am now, in April and also German next fall.

ghoti and eleven

　　The topic would annoy you. The former word is from George Bernard Shaw and the latter is from my English teacher in my high school days. Both words were used to show how illogical English pronunciation was.
　　The word "eleven" has three "e"s. The pronunciation is [i] [e] [u] respectively. The teacher emphasized that you had to learn the spelling, pronunciation and meaning of every single English word respectively. Japanese syllabic symbols are associated with pronunciation on a one-to-one basis. It's the reason why the teacher emphasised the difference between the spelling and pronunciation in English.
　　By the way, can you imagine the meaning of "ghoti" by Mr. Shaw. "Gh" is pronounced "f" in the word "rough". "O" is likewise "i" in the word "women". "Ti" is "sh" in the word "nation". Finally, "ghoti" is "fish". Mr. Shaw intended to explain the absurdity of the spelling of English words.
　　I'm learning German now. In German, I don't have to memorize the pronunciation of each and every word. You can talk correctly just by seeing the spelling in German. It's great, though I'm not going to judge the comparative merits and demerits of English and German. It goes for Korean and Mandarin Chinese too, which I started to learn the other day. It's very interesting to me to know the features of various languages.

Rip-off Bullet Train

　　Have you ever seen the Chinese High Speed Trains? They are just copies of Japanese Shinkansen Bullet Trains and German ICEs. If you had seen the bullet trains in Japan or the ICEs in Germany, you would surely agree with me. I wondered why China didn't modify them even in a small way, but maybe they couldn't due to the overwhelming high level of achievement. They must have thought that just a little bit of addition could impair the functions of trains.
　　There's an epigraph that remains unnoticed by all under the stairs of the 18th platform reading "NEW TOKAIDO LINE, Product of the wisdom and effort of the Japanese people". I feel that the monument is imbued with strong yet modest Japanese pride. Japan produced the most secure, most punctual and fastest train in the world only in 19 years after the war in the midst of devastated conditions.
　　Did you notice "the Japanese people" in the epigraph? I'd like to place an emphasis on this. The main cast of this great achievement was not the Japan Railways(JR), not the big figures, not the engineers, but the Japanese people. Those who wrote this epigraph must have carved those words with pride as Japanese people, not as staff members of the JR.
　　Ordinary Japanese people always think of others. Do you know that more than 3000 personnel work every midnight to maintain the security of the railway. Nothing happens. It is the best and natural. Those who engage in such maintenance work would never be applauded, but they never cut corners on their routine work. No one was injured for 45 years since the start of the service. This fact proves their sincerity.
　　The other day, a big accident occurred in China. Additionally, I've heard that other many small accidents had often happend in China. The Chinese authorities hide the fact from their people that they had received assistance from Japan and Europian countries and moreover insist that they should have developed by themselves. However, there's one thing that they didn't notice. That is, they can never steal the spirit of Japanese people, who treat others with respect.

German InterCity Express　（ICE)

Oktoberfest

　　Oktoberfest (German word) is a well-known German event which is held in October. When I visited Germany in autumn 2009, I missed it though I really wanted to join the enthusiastic beer-people. I had to come back by Oct. 3rd. After the trip, I have been eager to attend the event.
　　The other day, an e-mail came to me from my second daughter, saying that she was chosen as one of the attendants of the "Nagoya Oktoberfest". Nagoya Oktoberfest? What's that? It's July, not October. Oktoberfest is not popular among Japanese. Why in Nagoya? Several questions came up and finally I was surprised to see the official website of the event.
　　Oktoberfest will be held in several places in Japan, and besides they seemed to have been held since a few years ago. I didn't know that.
　　Nagoya is one of the big cities in Japan. The event started on July 15th and continues to 24th. You can enjoy 24 kinds of German beer. Moreover German dishes which go well with beer are served. You can see them on the website. On the stage, German folk music is performed. If I had received the e-mail a few weeks earlier, I would have taken two days off and rushed to Nagoya. My daughter has enough German skills in such a casual situation. It would be the reason why she was chosen.

Hard Work

　　All the bridges on the Shimanami route span the big artery of ocean which connects the big port cities of Kobe and Osaka with China and both Koreas. So, the height of the bridge beam must be high enough for big cargo ships or tankers to be able to pass under the bridge. The path for bicycles is arranged on the same level of the bridge. The first picture shows me trying to climb up to the height of the beam. It was really hard work for me. I realized my lack of exercise in daily life. It might be my excuse, but jeans were not suitable for cycling. They restricted the movement of my knees.
　　In the second picture, I am riding on the bicycle path. The sky was getting better. This path was for bicycles and small motorcycles up to 50cc. The white line on the road stood for the separator line, but there was no one but us. I could ride freely.
　　The road was even and I was relaxed in the third picture. The weather was getting more and more clear, though distant islands were hazy.
　　The last picture shows a bicycle-parking area on Ohshima island. I've seen something similar in Germany, but I've never seen one in Japan. You would understand that this island welcomes cyclists.

Private Train

　　I uploaded a map which showed my cycling route in the last entry. Did you notice that a part of the trace dropped on the map. It was due to an outage of the battery of my GPS receiver which was written about in this previous entry. After one hour's interval, I found it stopped working and replaced the battery.
　　By the way, my house is 50 km away from the starting point of the "Shimanami route" and it has been a problem for me. Surprisingly however, JR (Japan Railway) started a special service once a month. That is, a service for cyclists who live in Matsuyama City. They take up to 30 cyclists to the nearest station of the "Shimanami route" along with their bikes. I applied for this service and could enjoy cycling there.
　　The picture shows the inside of the train. In Germany, the train which accommodates bikes was made for that purpose, but this car is for just normal use. Each bike is simply fixed by a rubber rope to a handrail. In this way, I was transferred to Hashihama Station which is the nearest JR station to the "Shimanami route".
　　It took an hour and ten minutes to move the distance of 50 km. This line was single-track. So, our train frequently had to stop at small stations and let other regular trains overtake or oncoming trains to pass by.

Debut of An Middle-Aged Cyclist

　　The Japan Archipelago comprises of four main islands; Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. I live on one of them, Shikoku. Shikoku and Honshu are connected by three routes which consist of several bridges respectively. The westernmost route of them is called Shimanami Kaido, which means "continuous islands". The distinctive feature of this route is that a bicycle path is made up along with the bridges. You can enjoy the view from a height of 70 meters above the sea while riding your bike there. I'm showing you pictures in my album on the right column of this blog. Please check them. I'll add some remarks in the following several entries about the pictures. When you travel by car on the bridge, you aren't allowed to stop your car on the bridge due to a Road Traffic Law because the route is an express highway. If you are on a bike, you can stop your bike wherever and for as long as you like on the bridge.
　　Cycling is getting popular year by year in Japan. When I visited Germany in 2009, I saw lots of people walking and pushing their bicycles even on a train.  I realized at that time that the arrangements for cyclists were far better than those of Japan. At the same time, I felt sorry about the poor conditions in my country. However, it might be getting better recently.
　　I've ridden my bike for about 70 km today. I'll write about my first one-day cycling in the next several entries.

Rainy Season

　　The rainy season has just started in my hometown. We had been concerned about the little rainfall for the past few months. That's why we are now relieved, while feeling sorry for the victims of eastern Japan. A vast area of eastern Japan has been suffering from the ground sinking after the quake and heavy rainfall would be painful for the victims.
　　By the way, the general meeting of the Matsuyama-Freiburg association was held today and the clean-up of Freiburg Street was scheduled at first, but it was put off due to the heavy rain. The members got together at a coffee shop along the street and enjoyed chatting. As I heard various stories of trips to Europe, I got eager to travel abroad.

Rothenburg!

　　One of my acquaintances held a personal exhibition and I visited it. He looked like being addicted to the beauty of the streets of European countries on his first visit. That's why he started to make miniatures of the German city of Rotenburg which was most impressive to him.
　　Anyway, I admired his patience to build those miniatures by himself, no matter how strong an impression he had got. I recalled the joyous faces of my daughters in the miniature world in Victoria.

Goldene Woche

　　Die Goldene Woche ist eine Reihe von japanischen Feiertagen von Ende April bis Anfang Mai. Viele Unternehmen und Einrichtungen machen in dieser Zeit sehr schön. Deshalb verreisen auch viele Japanerin den  Urlaub. Auf den Flughäfen und den Autobahnen herrscht dann sehr starker Verkehr.

Bicycle and Germany

　　I enjoy riding my bicycle every weekend these days. However, I didn't have the remotest interest in bicycles before. Riding a bicycle looked like hard work for me, especially in summer as I have a tendency to perspire a lot and I hate hot days. On the other hand, riding a motorcycle is comfortable against the wind. I like motorcycles and I didn't even imagine that I would like bicycles. I think that the view of the German lifestyle changed my mind.

German Media and Administration

　　Germany has been one of my favorite countries since I began learning German in my medical school and now I often enjoy netsurfing on Germany. The other day, I was really surprised to read some reports on Japan's atomic plant's accident published by various German news media. This unhappy accident was made a political issue by the German opposition party. I have written about the SPD before.
　　The atomic power station's collapse is broadcast hysterically in Germany, where those facilities have been reportedly decreased by the government in the not so distant future. Germany seems to have increased the import of natural gas from Russia. The natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea is under construction and is not being interfered with by other countries on the way to Germany. In other words, they are shifting the source of power from atomic power to natural gas. They say, "The replacement is for safety." Don't they think of improving the safety of atomic power plants? Japan will do it, I believe.
　　Russia will sell the natural gas to Germany because it's more profitable than they use it domestically. On the other hand, Russia gets power from atomic power plants. It means that the German efforts to abolish the atomic power plants are nonsense from the global viewpoint.
　　What's more, the French atomic plants are lined up near the border with Germany. If an accident occurred in these plants, Germany would be surely affected because of the west wind.
　　The German reaction might be due to the fear of an accident in Chernobyl though the structure of the reactor, the running system and the measures taken against the accident are totally different from those of Japan. In Japan, the price of one's life is unbelievably high in comparison with that of Russia. The Environment Agency set the ambient criteria strictly and with enough margin of safety. If several data exceed the allowable limit set by the Agency a little, you don't have to panic. I'd like the German media to keep their head and check the real data carefully.
　　Eventually, they are just making political capital out of the unhappy accident in Japan. The Prime Minister, Merkel, might be sorry for the current of thought as she is originally a physical scientist from East Germany and knows more about atomic plants.
　　A friend in need is a friend indeed. Germany wasn't a real friend of Japan. The German rescue team went back home at once without heading for the devastated areas while 18 teams from all over the world are working there. Lots of the Japanese are grateful for those countries from the bottom of their heart. The present administration must be so, though their policy originally was anti-U.S. How about Germany? This year is the 150th anniversary of entering diplomatic relations between Germany and Japan. I was so disappointed.

ドイツでの日本の報道について

ドイツは大好きな国の一つで、時折ドイツ国内のネットサーフィンを楽しむ。日本の地震の報道については本当に驚いた。日本の自然災害が政争の具にされているのだ。

ドイツの原発事情；

日本の事故がヒステリックに報道されている。
ドイツでは原発を減らすという。そしてロシアからのガスを買う。他国に影響されぬようバルト海ルートが造られているという。ロシアは自国で消費するよりも高く売れるのでガスを売り、自国では原子力発電を行う。地球レベルで見ればなんの環境対策にもなっていない。
フランスの原発はドイツとの国境近くに建設されている。何かあれば、ドイツに影響があるだろう。
チェルノブイリの後遺症か？　日本と比べたらその構造も、管理体制も、対応も全く異なるのに。日本の厳しすぎる環境基準、ロシアと比べて命の価値の違う日本。
結局は、ドイツで原発を減らすというのはＳＰＤ（ドイツの民主党）の政争の具である。物理学者のメルケルさん、さぞや頭の痛いことだろう。

結局ドイツは友人ではなかった；

ドイツからの救援隊は何もすることなく帰国した。１８地域からの救援隊は今なお活動しているにもかかわらず。アメリカには借りができたなと国民の誰もが感じている。アメリカ嫌いの現政権もなにも言葉はあるまい。果たしてドイツに対してはどうか？今年は国交開始１５０周年という節目である。ドイツには失望した。

Cycling

　　Since I saw lots of people riding their bike in Germany last year, I have been interested in bikes, though the environment for cyclists isn't good in Japan in comparison with Germany. Some of my friends were also addicted to the bike at that time. Naturally, cycling is good for my health. This is why I bought the bike. It would be great if the cycling path network extended across the country and trains could accommodate bikes.
　　I bought a pair of cycling gloves and shoes on my friends' advice today just before my first ride. Both are made for cycling and are comfortable. I was surprised, however, to find the holes on the sole for binding the shoes and the pedals. I just knew that there was something to connect both, but didn't know about the holes. If it rained, my feet would surely get wet naturally.
　　Anyway, I went out for cycling. It took some time to understand how to change the gears, but the bike was well designed, as to be expected. The bike was really controllable even for me though I'm just a beginner. I enjoyed riding for about 2 hours and biked nearly 20 km. It led me to know that the distance can be more than I had previously expected. I'd like to ride at least 20 km every week at first, and gradually make it longer.

My Daughter Came Home

　　You might think the topic is a little orotund, but ask me, "Where did she come from?" She returned from Germany 'after a year's interval'. She lived in Freiburg alone and learned the German language and how German life was. Her major is German culture.
　　A Japanese old saying tells us that if you love your kids, you should leave them alone in travel. I looked for the same proverb in the dictionary and found this. "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Her life in Germany wasn't always happy, but she didn't give up and survived. I found something different in her from what she used to be a year ago. I realized that the old saying was correct. It was not bad to allow her to live in Germany as the saying goes.

Depression and Healing

　　It might be a part of the symptoms of what you call depression. I've been reluctant to do anything these past couple of months. I don't know why. Due to the empty nest syndrome? Or, I began to hate my job? Having said that, I can't help doing nothing. I have to work. I continue to keep this blog from now too to cheer myself up.
　　Several acquaintances had been concerned about me, because I didn't post any messages on mixi, the most popular Japanese SNS for some time. Messages on the SNS and entries on this blog are just the broadcast mail for my friends, some of whom live overseas. Anyway, to my friends, I'm getting better day by day. Don't worry!
　　By the way, I got an e-mail from my second daughter who lives in Germany. A picture was added and I'll show it to you. She sounded like she had visited Bern with her friends. Only a year ago, she couldn't do anything in Germany, but now she can travel around in Europe. Her growth made me happy and could be an effective medicine. She is now invited to her friend's house to celebrate Christmas day. I am also grateful for the family's favor. I can't wait to see her pictures of German Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
